SFDUG April 2016 Meeting: Supercharge your Dynamo Script

On Wednesday, April 13 at 6:00pm, SFDUG welcomes Anthony Buckley-Thorp from Flux. Anthony will be demonstrating new ways to augment your Dynamo workflows and exchange data with other design applications.

Feature Presentation: Flux - Supercharge your Dynamo Script.

Dynamo is all about manipulating data: numbers, text, geometry...but what do you do when this data lives in multiple spreadsheets, Rhino or SketchUP files across different people and firms? What happens if that data is still evolving and being updated over time? What if your Dynamo script depends on data generated in another Dynamo script?

With Flux, data exchange is no longer a barrier. Live links between remote software on different computers allow your Dynamo script to feed on multiple data sources. You can even exchange information between multiple Dynamo users in real time! In this introductory session, we will look at the basics of how Flux transmits data between your data silos and walk through some practical example workflows. We will also look at the Flux online data preview and collaboration features. By the end of the session, you will be able to liberate your data and supercharge your Dynamo script!

Speakers Bios:
Anthony Buckley-Thorp is an Application Engineer at Flux Factory, a San Francisco based startup that was originally founded in the Google X Labs. After graduating from Imperial College in 2007 he worked as a Structural Engineer with Arup in London, moving to their Shanghai office in 2009. A heavy focus on complex geometry projects led him to become an experienced practitioner in digital tool building and parametric workflows.

Anthony now works at Flux to bridge the software and building design worlds. He is a strong advocate for the power of technology to disrupt the industry and revolutionize the way buildings are designed and delivered. Working closely with industry partners, Anthony supports live project teams to implement and exploit the latest advances in web technology and algorithmic design.

Where do I download Dynamo?  Dynamo comes preloaded on Revit 2015 & 2016.  You can also try for free or purchase the standalone version. To download go here: http://dynamobim.org/download/ 

Is there access to power and wifi at the venue? Guest WiFi is provided at HOK. There is a limited number of power outlets.  We recommend to bring a laptop charged to last 2-hours. 

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event? Using public transportation is the easiest way to get to HOK, right out of the Montgomery BART station. Underground parking available for a fee. Parking on the street is free after 6:00pm. 

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? Yes. To have access to the venue, you must register and show your printed ticket along any form of identification to security at the front lobby desk. You will not be permitted to enter HOK offices without registration. Online registration closes at 11:00am on the day of the event, no exceptions.

SFDUG March 2016 Meeting: Dynamo a BIM Consultant's Perspective

On Wednesday, March 9th at 6:00pm, SFDUG welcomes Edwin Guerra from Summit BIM Consulting in Vancouver, BC. We will also kick off the meeting with a hands-on session - bring your laptops!

We are starting a new series: each meeting will end with an in-depth look at one particularly useful node. First up is filtering, with examples and use cases that will make this little guy a prominent member of your Dynamo tool box.



Educational Module: Advanced Data Management in Dynamo 
Speaker: Colin McCrone, Autodesk 

How does List.Map actually work and how can you avoid using it? What does var[]..[] mean? Learn about data types and structures in Dynamo that will help you navigate the tougher problems. Learn strategies for creating default values in functions and custom nodes to make the most robust and useful tools for your work. This is going to be a hands-on session:  bring your own laptop with Dynamo 9.0 installed.

Dynamo is transforming the Revit landscape by allowing users to customize and develop new workflows in a friendly visual environment. In this presentation we will survey some key developments in Dynamo as well as some practical examples illustrating new and efficient ways of working. The use of Revit as primarily a documentation tool with clash coordination and visualization abilities is quickly moving towards more advanced uses that give designers valuable feedback to evaluate and create better designs. 



Speakers Bios: 

Colin McCrone serves as technical evangelist for the Dynamo product development team. He has emerged as a foremost lecturer and instructor for Autodesk. As a computational designer and design software evangelist, he teaches and gathers requirements for digital design tools, manages customer interactions, and technical consulting services. 

Edwin Guerra is a BIM Consultant at Summit BIM Consulting in Vancouver, BC. With a background in structural engineering and building performance, he brings to his projects advanced skills in data visualization, workflow development, workflow implementation, standards compliance, research and project management. He believes that there is great opportunity within the AECO industry to streamline processes and workflows to deliver high performance buildings.

In this demonstration, you will learn how to create a Revit shading fin family with perforations based on a source image using Dynamo.

Dynamo is quickly making it possible to do things in Revit that have only been a dream up to this point, but with the ImportInstance.ByGeometry node as the primary means of getting content into Revit and Adaptive components constrained by the limitations of Revit modeling capabilities, we need something better if we are truely be able to utilize Dynamo to create complex geometric forms in Revit. We explore some of the option to do just this...
Speakers Bios:
Luc Deckinga works as Design Application Manager and Computational Designer at Perkins + Will where he facilitates computational tools that weave data and parametric systems into architectural design. His responsibilities include BIM planning, implementation and management as well as developing and delivering software training to the technical staff.
Jeremy Luebker is a computational design specialist for Perkins + Will. He is currently working on and international transit project for which he is using Dynamo to create and document the free-form and complex structural elements in Revit. His expertise includes prototyping techniques, 3d printing and digital fabrication.

SFDUG Jan 2016 Meeting Recording: Dynamo lab at CCA

California College of the Arts students presented their final project from the Fall 2015 Building Technology elective course. Denita Irsjad, Trenton Jewett, and Anh Vo showed us the art of live demo using Dynamo! Courtney Howard, CannonDesign and Cesar Escalante, HOK discussed what they learned at Autodesk University and provided insight to the most relevant Dynamo classes.

SFDUG January 2016 Meeting: Dynamo lab at CCA

On Wednesday, January 13th at 6:00pm, SFDUG will kick off the New Year with an overview of Autodesk University Dynamo classes along with a feature presentation from three California College of the Arts students. 




Educational Module: Dynamo at AU 2015
Speakers: Courtney Howard, CannonDesign and Cesar Escalante, HOK

Autodesk University featured a sold-out Computation Design Workshop and a record 20+ Dynamo related classes. Courtney and Cesar will discuss what they learned and provide insight to the most relevant Dynamo features.

Featured Presentation: Dynamo Lab at CCA - Top student projects
Speakers: Denita Irsjad, Trenton Jewett, and Anh Vo

California College of the Arts students will present their final project from the Fall 2015 Building Technology elective course. The course, like others taught recently at Georgia Tech and MIT, was modeled as an introduction to both BIM and design computation using Revit and Dynamo. The students' project proposes a new educational pavilion for CCA. They will present their results and their process, which involved Dynamo and some of its extensions as a means to build aspects of their Revit project.
