SFDUG August 2016 Meeting: Space Plan Generator + First Year Anniversary!

On Wednesday, August 10 at 6:00pm, SFDUG will celebrate its first anniversary hosting Subhajit Das, from Autodesk, who will present his recently launched tool for Dynamo, the Space Plan Generator, a project developed jointly with Georgia Tech and Perkins+Will. Stick around after the presentation for an extended social to commemorate the first year of our awesome local Dynamo community!

This year's session of RTC North America brought together the sharpest speakers sharing their latest developments and innovations on Design Technology. So Young will distill for us her take on the event and a summary of what was presented on the Dynamo front.

Feature Presentation: Space Plan Generator

More often than not, architectural design is constrained by the pressures of tight deadlines and the difficulty in locating and applying the necessary expertise at just the right moment to a project. By combining algorithms (from computational geometry & generative design) implementing professional expertise with project requirements and conditions, Architects can foresee a new ear of augmented design decisions. Expanding the ability to rapidly evaluate many more possibilities than ever before to aid informed decision making at the early stages of a project. This 'Automated Space Plan Generator' project developed in Autodesk Dynamo visual programming environment, integrates site conditions, program requirements, and the expertise of Perkins+Will's health care planners to automate some aspect of the explicit and implicit knowledge base which can be reused across projects of different scale and genre. The system is further being tested to design a bed tower addition to an existing healthcare facility on a tightly constrained site, with client requirements to maximize final patient bed count and connectivity to the existing hospital, while complying with a new set of facility design guidelines and local building codes. 


Perkins+Will, Georgia Tech, and Autodesk are creating Space Plan Generator (SPG) - a method and tool to help design teams define program requirements, and semi-automatically generate and analyze large numbers of space plans. Developed on the highly adaptable and extensible Dynamo visual platform, SPG improves design exploration, performance integration and decision communication. 

Speakers Bios: 

Subhajit Das has diverse background in Architecture and Computer Science with degree in M Arch Design Computing, University of Pennsylvania and MS Computer Science, Georgia Tech. Previously he has worked with firms like Atkins, UNStudio, Mad Architects in USA and China bringing in expertise in advanced computational design and building information modeling. Currently, he is pursuing PhD in Computer Science at Georgia Tech with core interests in Machine Learning, Computational Graphics and Design Automation.

SFDUG July 2016 Meeting: LadyBug: A Parametric Environmental Plugin for Dynamo

On Wednesday, July 13 at 6:00pm, SFDUG welcomes Mostapha Sadeghipour, the creator of Ladybug + Honeybee plugins that help designers inform architectural design with sustainable design parameters.





Featured Presentation: LadyBug: A Parametric Environmental Plugin for Dynamo
Speaker: Mostapha Sadeghipour

Ladybug is an opensource environmental plugin for parametric design environment which assists in the creation of environmentally conscious building design.
Ladybug imports standard EnergyPlus Weather files (.EPW) into Dynamo and provides a variety of 3D interactive graphics to support the decision ­making process during the initial stages of design. The plugin also provides further support for designers as they test their initial design options with radiation,
sunlight ­hour, and shading analysis. Integration with parametric modeling interfaces allow for an almost instantaneous feedback and since the plugin runs within the design environment, the information and analysis are interactive.
Ladybug, which is originally developed for Grasshopper3D, is now available for both Grasshopper3D and DynamoBIM. In this presentation Mostapha Roudsari will present the latest features of Ladybug for Dynamo including the new Ladybug cross ­platform Application Programming Interface (API).

Speakers Bios:
Mostapha is the creator of Ladybug + Honeybee. Over the last few years, he has been dedicated to the integration of parametric environmental analysis and architectural design. He is currently works as adjunct professor of Environmental Building Design at the University of Pennsylvania.

Jeffrey McGrew from Because We Can discussed how to use Dynamo and Digital Fabrication to make great interiors, furniture, and art. He presented recently completed projects, showing off the open-source collection of Nodes called 'BecauseWeDynamo', and talked about his views on the future of Digital Fabrication, BIM, and Dynamo-based automation.

Jeffrey will present a few of his recently completed projects, show off the open-source collection of Nodes called 'BecauseWeDynamo', and talk about his views on the future of Digital Fabrication, BIM, and Dynamo-based automation. 

Speakers Bios:
Jeffrey McGrew is a licensed architect in California. He has a background in business, architecture, technology, and construction. Since 2006, he has been the co-founder of the design-build studio Because We Can in Oakland, CA. An award-winning designer and public speaker, he loves to solve problems, generate ideas, and make great things for the people we work for. He also runs the technical side of the company, from computer code to building code, creating new ways of building via the combination of BIM and digital fabrication. Prior to founding Because We Can, Jeffrey worked for a number of prominent local architects, was a technical fabrication consultant, and has helped bring several physical and software products to market. In his non-existent spare time, he likes to experiment with CNC machines, create 3D models, make sculptures, brew beer and play games with friends.

SFDUG May 2016 Meeting Recording: Revit Performance Analytics in Dynamo

David Baldacchino from HOK and Alexandra Bergin from Autodesk Enterprise Support presented examples using Dynamo to perform analytics on Revit models.
