SFDUG Apr 2018 | The Making, Breaking and Fixing of Computational Design Superusers

On April 18th, at 6:30pm pst, SFDUG and the Bay Area welcomes Randy Deutsch, Director of Graduate Studies at University of Urbana-Champaign, to speak about the role that design technology superusers play in shaping the AEC Industry.

Featured Presentation:
The Making, Breaking and Fixing of Computational Design Superusers
Speaker:
Randy Deutsch

Architects and other design professionals learned to become computational designers primarily working with visual programming tools, addressing design generation, task automation, and everything between. With the advent of AI/ML upon us, a new model of computational designer will be needed. This high-level presentation explores the forces that are bringing about this change; how schools and firms are rising to meet the demand for computational specialists; and what it will mean to be a high-functioning computational designer – or superuser – in the not too distant future.
Randy Deutsch AIA, LEED AP is the Associate Director for Graduate Studies and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign teaching design, professional practice, building technology and digital technology. Randy has been an international keynote speaker, a design technology authority, Exec Ed program leader at Harvard GSD, and architect responsible for the design of over 100 large, complex sustainable projects. He has written for DesignIntelligence, has been featured in ARCHITECT Magazine and Architectural Record, and is the author of three books: Convergence: The Redesign of Design (AD, 2017) on the nature of the ongoing convergence of technology and work processes; Data Driven Design and Construction: Strategies for Capturing, Analyzing and Applying Building Data (Wiley, 2015) on the innovative individuals and firms who are leveraging data to advance their practices; and, BIM and Integrated Design: Strategies for Architectural Practice (Wiley, 2011) tracking the social and organizational impacts of the new technologies and collaborative work processes, among other publications. His next book is, Superusers: An Architect’s Survival Guide to Technology Transformation (Routledge, 2019.)

SFDUG Mar 2018 | AEC Hackaton 5.0 | Everyday Dynamo: Practical Uses for BIM Managers

On Wednesday March 14th, at 6:00pm PST, SFDUG welcomes Paul Wintour, our remote speaker connecting live from Australia, to speak about practical dynamo applications for BIM Managers.

Educational Module: Technology Disruptions at the Oakland AEC Hackathon 5.0
Speaker: Danny Bentley, SOM
Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning. These are some of the topics that resonated at the fifth edition of the AEC Hackathon in the Bay Area. Hear from Danny Bentley, SOM Technologist and Hackathon Veteran, what was the good, the bad, and the trendy at this annual event attended by dozens of local community technologists, sofware developers, and designers.
Danny Bentley is a Structural BIM Technical Designer and Drafter at Skidmore Owing and Merrill. With a background in Industrial Design and Computer Science. He is also a Youtuber with channels for Dynamo with Python and Revit API. At SOM he develops applications through Dynamo, Python and the C# to help facilitate workflow when dealing with complex geometry.
Featured Presentation: Everyday Dynamo: Practical Uses for BIM Managers
Remote Speaker: Paul Wintour
There are many day-to-day laborious tasks that an Architect needs to perform. Whether it is sequentially renumbering doors or rooms, cleaning up the Revit model, or a host of other tasks, this presentation will demonstrate how to automate these processes so that you can spend more time on what you do best, design. By harnessing the power of the Dynamo Package Manager, the class will illustrate how to extend Revit's capabilities to maintain your Revit model. We'll cover how to automate: workset creation, renumbering rooms, renumbering doors, purging unused filters, adjusting a room's upper limit, controlling a view's underlay, creating unplaced rooms, and adjusting titleblock properties to name but a few.
Paul Wintour established Parametric Monkey in 2014with the aim to accelerate computational literacy within architectural design in order to transform the building industry. Since then, Parametric Monkey has grown to become a digital design consultancy which brings specialist architecture, BIM, computational design, and digital fabrication expertise to project owners, architects, contractors, developers, engineers and local governments. With a focus on interoperability and nimbleness, Parametric Monkey exists where building and technology intersect.
Paul is a registered architect in NSW and the UK and has worked extensively in Australia, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and The Netherlands. Paul holds a MArch from the Architectural Association’s Design Research Laboratory. He has taught at the University of Technology Sydney, the University of New South Wales, the Queensland University of Technology, the University of Hong Kong, and the Architectural Association. Paul was also the original creator of the BVN Dynamo package.

SFDUG Feb 2018 | Computational Design in Practice For Complex and High-Rise Structures

On Wednesday, February 21st at 6:30pm SFDUG welcomes Joseph Provenza from WSP as our featured speaker.  This month's meeting will be hosted at the AIA San Francisco.

Feature Presentation:
Computational Design in Practice For Complex and High-Rise Structures | Joseph Provenza

What started out as a toolset primarily employed by Architects a decade ago, visual programing tools have become pervasive in the AEC industry. Through case studies of various high profile projects around the globe, Joseph Provenza will demonstrate ways in which WSP is leveraging computational design tools in day to day practice for the optimization, automation and design of large scale projects. More interesting perhaps will be tracing the evolution from a sparsely utilized toolset reserved for addressing complex forms to one which has become fully embedded within day to day engineering
practice through the efforts of WSP’s Global Computational Design Group, WSPnext.

Joseph Provenza AIA, PE, LEED AP BD+C is a Project Manager at WSP trained and licensed in both Architecture and Engineering. He is currently overseeing 3 million square feet of high profile projects at various stages of design and construction in New York City and leads WSP’s Global Computational Design Group, WSPnext. His 11 year tenure with WSP, a multinational engineering consultancy,  has been split amongst offices in NY, LA, SF and New Delhi.
